Ho'Down Quartet is impressing audiences in San Francisco and beyond with an acoustic sound that is at once driving, refreshing, and unique. Featuring a mix of traditional bluegrass, string jazz, original material, and other eclectic acoustic music, HDQ has won acclaim as one of the most exciting bands to emerge from the Bay Area music scene.
The group is the product of four musicians with the common aspiration of stretching the boundaries of the bluegrass genre. Jim Chomas wins audiences over with his soulful lead vocals, innovative songwriting, and hot guitar picking. Mike Fox is a fiddle virtuoso with interminable energy; he weaves his Celtic, Klezmer, and Latin influences seamlessly into the melodies. Jordan Klein's banjo playing ranges from traditional to experimental; his tenor harmonies also help to round out the group's sound. Ben Bernstein is an accomplished bassist who tours the country with the groundbreaking jam band New Monsoon. Each band member contributes original compositions to the group's repertoire.
The band released their debut album Hangin' Tree in July 2003, and followed that up in November 2004 with LIVE! on a high wire. With their high energy, talented musicianship, charismatic style, and innovative writing, Ho'Down Quartet hopes to make listeners rethink their notion of bluegrass music.
